The Unequal Burden of Cancer: An Assessment of Nih Research and Programs for Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved by Institute of Medicine,

We know more about cancer prevention, detection, cancer research and treatment than ever before-yet not all segments of the U.S. population have benefited to the fullest extent possible from advances in our understanding of cancer. Some ethnic minorities experience more cancer than the majority population, cancer research and poor people- no mater what their ethnicity-often lack access to adequate cancer care. The Unequal Burden of Cancer provides an authoritative view of cancer as it is experienced by ethnic minorities cancer research and the medically underserved. The panel offers conclusions cancer research and recommendations in these areas: -- Defining cancer research and understanding special populations, cancer research and improving the collection of cancer-related data. -- Setting appropriate priorities for cancer research and increasing the effectiveness of specific NIH research programs, to ensure that special populations are represented in clinical trials. -- Disseminating research results to health professionals serving these populations, with sensitivity to the issues of cancer survivorship. The committee recommends a mechanism for annual reporting on the status of cancer research among these populations. Additionally, the book provides a wealth of background information on the nation's struggle against cancer, the activities cancer research and expenditures of National Institutes of Health, cancer research and other relevant topics. The Unequal Burden of Cancer will be of interest to federal health authorities, health care providers cancer research and researchers, advocates for ethic minorities cancer research and underserved populations, cancer research and medical faculty cancer research and students.

One out of nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In fact, it is the second leading cause of cancer death for women (after lung cancer) cancer research and the leading overall cause of death in women between the ages of forty cancer research and fifty-five. For too long women have erroneously believed that there is little or nothing they can do to prevent this dread illness. Our major medical efforts are directed toward detecting cancer research and treating, rather than preventing, breast cancer. Professor Jane Plant, one of Britain's most eminent scientists, contracted breast cancer in 1987. She had five recurrences, and, by 1993, the cancer had spread to her lymph system. When orthodox medicine gave up cancer research and she was told that she only had three months to live, she determined to use her extensive scientific training cancer research and her knowledge of other cultures to find a way to survive. In her research, she was startled to find that in China breast cancer affects far fewer women than in Western countries. Plant considered that there could be a dietary trigger for the illness. As she continued her scientific investigations, she became convinced that there was a causal link between consumption of dairy products cancer research and breast cancer. Jane Plant finally defeated her breast cancer, in part because she used her training cancer research and knowledge as a natural scientist to understand it-- cancer research and then overcome it. Combining the diet her research had led to with traditional medical treatment, Professor Plant was not only able to triumph over her own disease but also to pass on what she had discovered to help more than sixty other women successfully fight their breast cancer. In this book, women will be presented for thefirst time with a compelling body of evidence strongly suggesting that consumption of dairy products may cause breast cancer. It will demonstrate the specific changes that women can make in their day-to-day lives to help prevent cancer research and treat breast cancer.
