Large Mammal Restoration: Ecological and Sociological Challenges in the 21st Century by David S. Maehr,
Evidence is mounting that top carnivores mammal lesson and other large mammals play a pivotal role in regulating ecosystem health mammal lesson and function, yet those are the species that are most likely to have been eliminated by past human activities. In recent decades, numerous efforts have been undertaken to return some of the species that were previously extirpated on local or regional scales. Large Mammal Restoration brings together for the first time detailed case studies of those efforts, from restoring elk in Appalachia to returning bison herds to the Great Plains to the much- publicized effort to bring back the gray wolf to Yellowstone National Park. Together these case studies offer important lessons mammal lesson and new ways of thinking for wildlife managers mammal lesson and conservation biologists involved with restoration programs. Sections examine: approaches to determining the feasibility of a restoration program critical hands-on aspects of restoring large mammals obtaining public input into the process mammal lesson and gaining community support for programs the potential of some species to return without direct human intervention, mammal lesson and what can be done to facilitate that natural colonization An introductory chapter by Reed F. Noss explores some of the reasons for restoring large mammals, as well as some of the ecological mammal lesson and social complications, mammal lesson and a concluding overview by David S. Maehr discusses the evolutionary importance of large mammal restoration. Contributors include Paul C. Paquet, Barbara Dugelby, Steven H. Fritts, Paul R. Krausman, Larry D. Harris, Johnna Roy, mammal lesson and many others. Biodiversity Conservation in Costa Rica: Learning the Lessons in a Seasonal Dry Forest
The beautiful tropical dry forest of northwest Costa Rica, with its highly seasonal rainfall mammal lesson and diversely vegetated landscape, is disappearing even more rapidly than Costa Rica's better-known rain forest, primarily because it has been easier to convert to agriculture. This book, based on more than thirty years of study, offers the first comprehensive look at the ecology, biodiversity, mammal lesson and conservation status of this endangered mammal lesson and fragile region. The contributors, from Costa Rica, Britain, Mexico, mammal lesson and the United States, mammal lesson and representing the fields of ecology, environmental education, policy, mammal lesson and the law, examine the major plant mammal lesson and animal groups living in the dry forest mammal lesson and present the first technical evaluation of Costa Rica's conservation efforts. As they assess the status of their area of specialty in the dry forest, the contributors also look beyond this particular region to show how its plants mammal lesson and animals are ecologically mammal lesson and evolutionarily connected to other geographic areas in Costa Rica mammal lesson and Central America. Their chapters cover topics such as watershed mammal lesson and coastal management, plant phenology, pollination, insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, mammal lesson and reptiles. They also consider the socioeconomic, policy, legal, mammal lesson and political aspects of biodiversity conservation, giving the volume a wide-ranging perspective mammal lesson and making a unique contribution to our knowledge of the tropical dry forest.
